CSRTA Verified Rescue Team Operator 01 – is an intensive, single-day up-skill training module that provides the essential foundation for individuals working in confined-space rescue environments.
The module develops core competencies in hazard identification, environmental impact mitigation, harness inspection and selection, basic knots used in rescue work, assembling and operating mechanical-advantage systems, reading ATEX equipment markings, and undertaking effective atmospheric monitoring, including T90 interpretation, bump testing, and TWA checks.
Learners also develop clear and accurate radio communication skills, apply phonetic-alphabet protocols, and recognise additional hazards such as flowing water or unstable working surfaces.
These capabilities ensure operatives meet the safety-critical expectations of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, ACOP L101, and current industry guidance while operating safely under supervision, either as part of a rescue team or as a high-risk entrant.
To enrol on VRTO1, learners must already hold:
A Confined Space qualification aligned to the National Occupational Standard EUSCS03
A Confined Space qualification aligned to the National Occupational Standard EUSCS08
A first aid qualification at an equivalent Level 'B' RCSEd Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (e.g., First Aid at Work)
A current medical fitness certificate for confined space working.
While VRTO1 stands as a complete operational module in its own right, it also provides the entry pathway into VRTO2, where learners may later progress into advanced Rope Systems or Confined Space First Responder specialisms.
