VRTO2 – Verified Rescue Team Operator Level 2 – is an advanced up-skill programme designed for operatives who have already achieved VRTO1 and are progressing to more complex confined space rescue and medical responsibilities.
VRTO2 is delivered as two specialist modules, each of which can be completed independently to meet organisational or individual development needs. These modules provide advanced technical capability in either rope systems or confined space First Responder, allowing learners to undertake high-risk rescue tasks using specialist equipment, enhanced mechanical advantage systems, structured medical interventions, and dynamic decision-making processes appropriate to challenging rescue environments.
The Rope Systems (two day module) develops higher-level competence in rigging, powered rope systems, advanced mechanical advantage, stretcher handling, work restraint/positioning/fall arrest, and the safe coordination of staged rescue operations.
The First Responder (one day module) expands the operator's medical capability, covering DRCABCDE assessments, trauma management, CPR and AED use in confined conditions, oxygen therapy, infection control, psychological support, and prolonged field care until formal handover.
Together, these modules strengthen operational readiness and prepare personnel to function as senior rescue team members, fully aligned with the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, ACOP L101, National Occupational Standards, and recognised emergency care frameworks.
To enrol on VRTO2, learners must hold:
- Completion of VRTO1
- First aid qualification equivalent to Level 'D' RCSEd Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (e.g., FREC3)
- Medical Gases Certificate covering O2
- Current medical fitness certificate for confined space and rescue operations
Although each module stands alone as a complete single-day qualification, completing both forms the full VRTO2 certification and provides a structured advancement pathway toward roles such as Rescue Team Leader, Rescue Team Manager and wider specialist rescue positions.
