CSRTA Rescue Team Leader – represents the progression from technical operational duties to full command, coordination, and decision-making responsibility within confined space rescue environments.
This course is a comprehensive one day program with both theoretical input and assessment of competence. You will be required to prepare a portfolio of evidence following the course that documents your implementation of the knowledge and skills required for this element.
Building upon the advanced rope systems and First Responder competencies gained in VRTO1 and VRTO2, the Team Leader assumes accountability for planning, directing, and validating every element of a confined space rescue operation. This includes verifying that rescue arrangements meet legal and procedural requirements, ensuring risk assessments are accurate, and overseeing the performance, welfare, and communication discipline of all rescue personnel under their command.
In the Team Leader role, the focus shifts from executing personal tasks to integrating and supervising the actions of multiple team members, ensuring that equipment, personnel, and operational plans align with strict safety and compliance standards. Team Leaders routinely liaise with entry personnel, site controllers, dutyholders, and multi-agency stakeholders, applying rescue principles and structured communication models to maintain coordination in complex, high-pressure environments.
They must make timely and critical decisions that balance casualty welfare with team safety, especially when prioritising casualty extractions, managing evolving hazards, enforcing safety zones, or coordinating the transition of First Responder activities into the broader rescue strategy.
A defining aspect of the VRTL role is the ability to manage the entire operational environment, ensuring that communication protocols are enforced, incident response procedures are followed, and that investigations, reporting duties, and evidence preservation are completed in accordance with the required legal and organisational standards.
This leadership position is suited to individuals who have fully mastered the technical and medical competencies of VRTO1 and VRTO2 and are ready to safeguard operational integrity, guide others under pressure, and take responsibility for successful outcomes in hazardous and complex rescue scenarios.
