We’re proud to announce the launch of the Confined Space First Responder course, developed in collaboration with the Confined Space Rescue Trade Association (CSRTA).
This is not another generic first aid course with confined space examples added in. It is a purpose-built qualification, designed from the ground up for the operational realities of the confined space rescue industry by experienced, front-line rescue professionals.
The programme has been developed in alignment with the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care PHEM skills framework at a Level E descriptor, ensuring clinical credibility while maintaining operational relevance.
Why Does Our Industry Need Another Medical Qualification?
Confined space rescue is a specialist discipline with hazards that are not routinely encountered in general workplaces:
Toxic atmospheres
Entrapment and crush injuries
Limited access and prolonged extrication
Respiratory compromise
Complex evacuation environments
While qualifications such as FAW and FREC remain valuable and credible, they were designed for broad, generic application. They were never engineered specifically for confined space rescue.
This creates a gap.
A gap between what standard courses measure and what rescuers must be capable of doing under pressure.
The CSRTA steering group—formed from current industry professionals—identified the practical competencies rescuers develop over time to operate safely and effectively. This course formalises and standardises those capabilities.
The objective is simple: raise the clinical and decision-making standard across the confined space rescue sector.
What Makes This Course Different?
The defining principle of this programme is casualty-centred rescue.
Rather than defaulting to rapid extraction models or simulated “drag and dump” exercises, you will learn to balance:
The physiological needs of the casualty
The operational constraints of the environment
The risks to the rescue team
This approach enables safe, informed judgement under pressure—particularly in protracted or technically complex incidents.
What You Will Learn
This is an operationally focused medical qualification. Key areas include:
Principles of casualty-centred rescue
Critical incident decision-making
Management of entrapments and prolonged incidents
Treatment of confined space toxicity injuries and respiratory complications
Life support and airway management
Enhanced trauma management
Management of acute medical emergencies
Obtaining and recording clinical observations
Recognition of the deteriorating patient
Advanced casualty packaging and stretcher system use
Delivery of ongoing care following extrication
Liaison and structured handover to statutory emergency services
Management of multiple-casualty scenarios
This is not theory-heavy academic training. It is scenario-driven, operationally contextualised, and directly applicable to the environments you work in.
Already Hold FREC3 or Equivalent?
We recognise prior competence.
If you hold FREC3 or an equivalent qualification, you can undertake our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway. This process credits the knowledge and skills you already possess and reduces the course to the additional confined space–specific competencies not covered within the standard FREC syllabus.
No duplication. No wasted time. Only relevant skill development.
The Standard Is Rising. Is Your Team Ready?
With the recent launch of the Confined Space Rescue Trade Association (CSRTA) this means our industry is evolving. Expectations around clinical capability, decision-making, and governance are increasing.
This CSRTA-approved qualification represents a step toward professionalising medical response within our sector.
If you are serious about:
Improving operational safety
Strengthening clinical and operational confidence
Making defensible decisions under pressure
Raising the standard within your team
Now is the time to act.
Upgrade yourself.
Places are limited to maintain high instructor-to-candidate ratios and maximise scenario realism.
